Over 1,000 firefighters and volunteers from 49 fire brigades get together for the New Year to demonstrate their firefighting spirit and techniques in Kanazawa Castle Park.

KANAZAWA CITY NEW YEAR fIRE BRIGADES’ PARADE

    Date: 10 January 2016

They climb up ladders to perform a traditional firefighting technique called “Kaga-tobi”, a form of acrobatics on ladders and one of Kanazawa’s cultural assets. Firefighters dressed in nothing but Fundoshi loincloths perform simultaneous fire hose water spraying, creating a dynamic display of bravery and traditional skill. Kaga-tobi ladder climbing began during the Edo period. In the event of a fire, firefighters used to climb ladders to look around the area and battle the fire. The Kaga-tobi firefighting technique has been handed down through generations to this day.
