The Kuratsuki and Onosho canals running through the downtown of Kakinokibatake create a somewhat nostalgic atmosphere, even though the town is right next to the modern areas of Korinbo, Katamachi, Hirosaka, and Tatemachi. Explore the backstreets full of independent restaurants and bars which you cannot find on the main street. There are a number of unique eateries, including Japanese, Chinese, and European cuisines. The restaurants are busy at lunchtime and local office workers go to their favorite bars every night. The area is well loved by young, old, and families alike. Being close to the popular 21st Century Museum in Hirosaka, tourists often go to this area for a stroll after visiting the museum. It is therefore now known as the “21st Century Road Kakinokibatake” sightseeing route. The area holds unique events such as the “Kanazawa downtown Curry Expo” and “Mizukake Matsuri” (Water-throwing Festival), where people pour water on the Mikosi (a portable shrine) and pray for prosperous businesses and a good state of health. Find your secret spot in this locals’ favorite, old but new town.
